Caleb

How had we allowed any of this to happen? How had we even let him leave the house? He was a child. He was a baby. Despite what he may look like, he was.

We rushed out of the door in pursuit, but we lost him almost immediately. The streets were busy with Angel Guards on motorbikes, cars and buses and people going flooding to the pubs after work.

I wanted to reach out to him, to reach out with my empathy but…he’d acted as if I’d hurt him back at the house, and I didn’t want to hurt him again.

Besides, there were so many people around I didn’t even know if it’d be possible.

"Do we have any locator spells left?" Wade turned to me and I shook my head.

We’d used the only one we had to find Mayhem, to no avail.

"He must be here somewhere. He can’t have gone far," I said and continued our pursuit, wading through the streets trying—no, needing—to find our son.

We turned a corner when everything went quiet. People, cars, even the birds sleeping on the trees, vanished from one moment to the next.

“What the—” Wade said, turning to look at me as dumbfounded as I was.

But if he was looking for answers he was out of luck. I was no longer the solution man. If I was we wouldn’t be in this cesspit of a situation.

“Come on. Let’s go.” I started running again and Wade followed closely.

I expected the illusion—it had to be an illusion, right? People didn’t just vanish—to drop but the streets remained eerie and quiet and devoid of life.

Until we turned into Whitechapel Road. He was curled up on the pavement. His shoulders were shaking, his hands covering his face. He was much bigger than he had been two minutes ago, but I would recognize him anywhere. How could I not?

Wade was the first to get to him, and crouched to his level to check on him. “West? Are you okay? What happened?”

West sat up and leaned into his father’s embrace. His face was wet from tears and his eyes bloodshot. But he also looked like a young adult.

What is happening to my child and why can’t we figure it out?

"I’m sorry. I’m so…so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt anyone,” he wailed before Wade embraced him with both arms and turned to me.

“What do we do?” he asked me but I barely registered Wade.

It broke my heart seeing West so upset. I didn't even think. I did what I’d always done when someone in my life was hurting. I reached out to him, happiness and safety swirling into my power ready to attack him with their warmth.

West hissed and pulled away from his dad. He fell back onto the ground and writhed with his hands in his ears. “Stop it. Stop doing that. Stop!" he shouted before I realized what I was doing.

Shit.

“I’m sorry, West. I was only trying…” I drew my power back and bit my lip.

Why was he reacting like that to my empathy? I’d never had anyone react that way ever before.
